The Pig Breeding Centre was established by the Board at Puthur near Thrissur during the year 1996. The objective of the unit is to supply 10000 nos. of quality piglets annually to the farmers involved in the fattening of the piglets. In order to achieve the set goals, it is intended as per the project proposals to set up an 800 sow level unit. The ultimate livestock strength of the farm is expected to be about 4000. Ninety pigs were imported from United Kingdom during 1999. Hybrid piglets are produced through crossbreeding of the three exotic breeds namely Large white Yorkshire, Landrace and Duroc. The resultant three breed combination is expected to yield the optimum results for the economic traits like feed conversion ratio, prolificacy, daily average weight gain, back fat thickness etc. The centre also has a semen processing laboratory. For the first time in India, AI technique is being put to use for breeding the animals in the farm. The continued use of this technique is expected to assure the proper conduct of the breeding activities of the farm in accordance with the breeding programme envisaged. Four officers, 6 staff and 15 permanent workers headed by the Deputy General Manager (AH) run the unit. |
