All
the farm units together, have a livestock strength of 3916 which includes
670 cattle, 11 buffaloes, 390 goats and 2845 pigs (position as on 31-03-2004).
The exotic bulls (JY & HF), selected from the best possible sources
either by way of direct import or by the import of embryos are being
maintained at the Mattupatti farm wherein the climatic conditions suit
them the most. Herd structure of the cattle farm unit (as on 31.03.2004)
At
the beginning of the programme, pure exotic stock and zebu females
were used for producing the crossbred animals. On development of a composite
breed, the Sunandini emphasis was mainly on enhancing their performance
through selective breeding. However, with the expansion of the crossbreeding
programme to the northern districts, the pure bred bulls, viz. Jersey
and Holstein were introduced into the farm units. The inheritance from
Brown Swiss breed is gradually disappearing from the nucleus herd due
to replacement with animals having higher inheritance from Jersey and
Holstein Friesian breeds.
